MV back-up generators are required when in case of the utility failure it is necessary to ensure the supply of the totality of the loads or the major part of them.
Main characteristics to consider for the implementation of an MV back-up generator:


*Site activity
For all the other situations LV back generators may be enough
*Total power of the installed loads
*Sensitivity of circuits to power interruptions
*Availability of the public distribution network


The preferred basic configuration does not include an MV generator. Certain factors contribute to installing an MV generator:  
The main criteria to consider for the implementation of MV back-up generators are the following:
 
* Site activity
*Site activity: process with co-generation, optimizing the energy bill,
* Sensitivity of the loads to power interruptions
*Low availability of the public distribution network.
* Level of availability of the public distribution network
 
* Process including a co-generation system
Installation of a back-up generator can also be carried out at LV level.
* Need to optimize the energy bill.
